COT’s Opera for All Program Nurtures Tomorrow’s Opera P

Chicago-based attorney Edward Reicin has a strong love for opera. A professional opera singer himself, Edward Reicin is a member of the Metropolitan Opera National Council and regularly donates to the Chicago Opera Theater (COT).

COT is committed to nurturing the next generation of opera performers. The theater has a number of educational programs. One of these is Opera for All, an elementary program for students in the Chicago Public Schools.

Through Opera for All, COT partners with public schools to offer opera lessons for a full academic year (September to June) to students from 3rd to 8th grade. There are 30 sessions every year. Each lesson is 55 minutes long and is held once a week. Each is designed to teach students opera, guiding them through the processes of creation, production, and performance. The students also learn script writing, painting, dancing, and composing.

OFA lessons are administered by COT’s faculty, which is led by director of education Linden Christ and education assistant Emily Chervony. They work closely with teachers from the public schools and part-time teaching artists to ensure opera lessons are educational and entertaining.
